LTRVD Episode 31 – Fall Foliage Road Trip Recap

Podcasting

In this episode I recap my recent fall foliage road trip, lessons learned, and tips on all the places I visited.

Ellijay Georgia

I recorded last episode from the Plum Nelly Campground, just south of Ellijay Florida. It is also conveniently located, near the very touristy town of Blue Ridge, and many wineries, waterfalls and the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Here I also met fellow bloggers and YouTubers Robert and Jessica of Exploring The Local Life. Here’s a link to their YouTube channel as well.

In Ellijay I ate at River Street Tavern and Lee’s on River Street

From here I wanted to continue north because the whole point of this road trip was to witness the turning of the leaves. This year however, according to my brother in law, the trees were confused. He said that is was cold and the hot again. According to the map I had consulted it was supposed to be almost peaking at this time of the year but it was green everywhere except for a yellowish hue in some of the trees. I decided to go further north and higher in elevation, and the best choice from here was the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Smoky Mountains.Panic starting setting in, as all the campgrounds and seemed to be booked for the weekend. The first place that responded positively was called Almond Boat and RV Park on Fontana Lake, near Bryson City, North Carolina, so off I went. The park was nothing to write home about but it worked out fine as a gateway to the places where I wanted to go.

Fall Foliage, Finally

The day I arrived I drove for a couple of hours on the Blue Ridge Parkway, from Cherokee to Just Before Mount Pisgah, and I saw some patchy red and golds but not too many.

I spent the next day driving around on the Road to Nowhere, the Tail of the Dragon, the Foothills Parkway, and I wanted to see Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg but the traffic was too bad. I took US 441 across the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The view from Newfound Gap was amazing.

Back in Georgia

The next day I decided to begin the journey south. Passed by the Georgia Guidestones, Stayed at Watson Mill State Park. Then onto Fernandina Beach, where I stayed at Fort Clinch State Park.

Eventually, I made it back to Miami in one piece with a suitcase full of memories.
